Ocean Freight vs Air Freight to Jamaica: Which Should You Choose?
When you need to ship goods from South Florida to Jamaica, you have two main freight options: ocean and air. Each has clear advantages depending on what you're shipping, how much of it there is, and how quickly it needs to arrive.
This guide gives you a straightforward comparison so you can choose the right service for every shipment.
Side-by-Side Comparison

Understanding the Pricing Difference
The fundamental difference is how you're charged:
-
Ocean freight charges by volume (cubic feet). A box measuring 24" x 20" x 18" = 5 cubic feet. At $4.40/cu ft (Kingston individual), that's $22.00 + $45.00 BOL = $67.00 total.
-
Air freight charges by weight (pounds). That same box might weigh 30 lbs. At $5.00/lb, that's $150.00 total.
In this example, ocean freight is less than half the cost of air. That's the general rule: ocean is cheaper for most shipments. But there are specific scenarios where air freight wins.
When Ocean Freight Is the Better Choice
Large Volume Shipments
If you're shipping furniture, appliances, multiple boxes, or anything bulky, ocean freight is the clear winner. Pricing by the cubic foot means you can ship dense, heavy items economically.
Example: Shipping a couch
- Dimensions: 84" x 36" x 34" = 59.5 cubic feet
- Kingston individual rate: 59.5 x $4.40 = $261.80 + $45.00 BOL = $306.80
- That same couch might weigh 100 lbs by air: 100 x $5.00 = $500.00
Ocean freight saves you nearly $200 on this one item.
Multiple Boxes on One Shipment
The $45.00 BOL fee is charged once per shipment, not per box. If you're shipping 5 boxes, you pay one BOL fee. This makes ocean freight extremely cost-effective for multi-piece shipments.
Example: 5 boxes, each 3 cubic feet
- Total: 15 cubic feet at $4.40 = $66.00 + $45.00 BOL = $111.00
- If those 5 boxes weigh 20 lbs each (100 lbs total) by air: 100 x $5.00 = $500.00
Heavy Items
Items with high density — canned goods, building materials, tools, machinery — are always cheaper by ocean. The cubic footage stays the same regardless of weight, so heavy items don't cost more.
Regular Shipping Schedule
If you ship to Jamaica regularly (weekly or monthly), ocean freight on a consistent schedule is the most economical approach. Many of our commercial customers build their shipping into a routine.
When Air Freight Is the Better Choice
Urgent Shipments
Air freight gets your goods to Jamaica in 2–3 business days. Ocean freight takes 3–4 days after the container departs, plus you need to account for the container loading schedule.
If you need something in Jamaica by Friday, air freight is your best bet.
Lightweight, High-Value Items
For items that are light but valuable, air freight can be comparable in cost to ocean freight — and much faster.
Example: Laptop computer
- Weight: 6 lbs
- Air freight: 6 x $5.00 = $30.00
- Dimensions: 16" x 12" x 4" = 0.44 cubic feet
- Ocean freight: 0.44 x $4.40 = $1.94 + $45.00 BOL = $46.94
Wait — ocean freight is actually more expensive here because of the BOL fee. For very small shipments, the flat $45 BOL fee makes ocean freight disproportionately expensive.
This is the key insight: For lightweight items under roughly 10 lbs, air freight is often cheaper than ocean freight because there's no BOL fee.
Documents and Papers
Shipping important documents, contracts, certificates, or legal papers? Air freight is fast and cost-effective for paper shipments.
Example: 5 lb package of documents
- Air freight: 5 x $5.00 = $25.00, arrives in 2–3 days
- No reason to wait for ocean on something this small and light
Emergency Parts and Supplies
If a piece of equipment breaks down in Jamaica and the replacement part is available in Miami, air freight gets it there fast. The premium over ocean freight is worth it when downtime costs money.
Medical Supplies and Medications
Time-sensitive medical supplies, prescription medications, and healthcare equipment should always go by air when speed is important.
The Crossover Point: When Does Air Become More Expensive?
The exact crossover depends on the density of your shipment (weight relative to volume), but here are some general guidelines:
Air freight is cheaper when:
- Shipment weighs under ~10 lbs (the BOL fee makes ocean more expensive for tiny shipments)
- Items are very compact and light (documents, small electronics)
Ocean freight is cheaper when:
- Shipment weighs more than ~15 lbs
- You're shipping multiple items together (one BOL fee covers all)
- Items are bulky (furniture, appliances, barrels)

Can I Split a Shipment Between Ocean and Air?
Yes. Many customers use both services strategically:
- Send the bulk (clothing, food, household items) via ocean freight or barrels
- Send the urgent stuff (documents, medications, a birthday gift) via air freight
There's no requirement to choose one service for everything. Each shipment is independent with its own dock receipt and tracking.
What About Barrel Shipping?
If you're primarily shipping personal goods (food, clothing, household items), don't overlook barrel shipping at $50 per barrel flat rate. A standard 55-gallon barrel holds about 7.5 cubic feet of goods, making it the cheapest per-unit option for mixed personal shipments.
| Option | Cost for ~7.5 cubic feet | |--------|------------------------| | Barrel | $50.00 (flat rate) | | Ocean (Kingston, individual) | $33.00 + $45.00 BOL = $78.00 | | Air (at ~80 lbs estimated) | $400.00 |
Transit Time Details
Ocean Freight Timeline
The total transit time for ocean freight includes several stages:
- Drop-off and processing — your cargo is received at our warehouse, documented, and a dock receipt is issued
- Container loading — your cargo is consolidated with other shipments and loaded into a shipping container
- Ocean transit — Kingston: ~3 days, Montego Bay: ~4 days from port departure
- Customs clearance — processed through Jamaica Customs Agency
- Release — available for pickup at our Jamaica office
The total time from drop-off to availability in Jamaica depends on the shipping schedule. Containers depart regularly from the Port of Miami (POMTOC).
Air Freight Timeline
Air freight is more streamlined:
- Drop-off and processing — cargo is received and documented
- Air transit — 2–3 business days to Jamaica
- Customs clearance — typically faster than ocean due to smaller shipment size
- Release — available for pickup
Tracking Your Shipment
Both ocean and air freight shipments are fully trackable using your dock receipt number. Track your shipment here for real-time status updates at every stage.
Status updates include:

- Is it over 15 lbs or bulky? → Ocean freight (definitely cheaper)
- Am I shipping multiple items? → Ocean freight (one BOL fee)
- Is it a standard barrel of personal goods? → Barrel shipping ($50 flat)
- Not sure? → Use our freight calculator to compare
